If you’ve watched a rope horse futurity lately, chances are you’ve seen Daniel Reed’s standout black horse. Midnight Tag, the 2021gelding by Hashtags has been making a name for himself since he was just three years old, stepping into classes where most horses don’t yet compete. While rope horses typically don’t start showing until they’re four, Midnight Tag entered the 2024 Gold Buckle Futurities 4 & Under Heeling as a three-year-old—and proved he belonged.

He’s no stranger to rising above expectations. At the 2025 Royal Crown in Buckeye, Midnight Tag claimed round wins and added money to his record. He continued that momentum at the Old West Rope Horse Futurity, where he doubled up in both the 4 & Under and the 6 & Under divisions. Round after round, he held his own against older, more seasoned horses, finding his way to the top of the leaderboard and proving he can compete at any level.

Most recently, Midnight Tag once again made his presence known at the Royal Crown in Rapid City, capturing the 4 & Under Heeling Reserve Championship. He opened with a 153.25 in Round 1, followed by a sharp 155.54 in Round 2 to finish second in the round and collect $1,000. In Round 3, he came back even stronger, marking a 156.39 to win the round and another $1,500.

When it came down to the short round, Midnight Tag delivered his best run of the show—a 159.23, the highest score of the entire class. That performance sealed the Reserve Championship and added $6,708 in average money to his record. By the end of the day, the gelding’s winnings stood at $10,395.

With his Royal Crown success, Midnight Tag now boasts lifetime earnings of $43,527—further proof of the impact Hashtags offspring are making in the rope horse futurity arena.
